Bayhawks Sprint Past Cannons to Earn MLL Title Game Berth

BOSTON, Mass. - Attackman Ben Rubeor scored five of his game-high six goals in the second half as the second-seeded Chesapeake Bayhawks used a strong second half to defeat the third-seeded Boston Cannons by a 16-10 margin in the second semi-final at the 2012 Major League Lacrosse Championship Weekend presented by Warrior at Harvard Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Bayhawks, who are attempting to become the first team in league history to win four championships, advance to Sunday's championship game where they will face the top-seeded Denver Outlaws at 3 p.m. The Outlaws rallied from a 12-3 deficit to edge the Long Island Lizards by a 13-12 margin in the first semi-final.

After the teams traded goals to open the game, the Cannons used four consecutive goals, including a pair of markers from midfielder Mike Stone, to take a 5-1 lead with 3:18 remaining in the opening stanza.

But, the Bayhawks answered by scoring three straight goals to trim the deficit to 5-4 with 13:55 remaining in the first half.

The Cannons extended their advantage to 7-4 with back-to-back goals from defenseman PT Ricci and attackman Ari Sussman before the Bayhawks used a five-point run, including a pair of two-point goals from midfielder Kyle Dixon, to take a 9-7 lead with 4:12 left in the first half.

A goal by defenseman Kyle Sweeney with 1:52 remaining trimmed the margin to 9-8 at the intermission.

After Stone tied the game at 9-9 with 8:56 remaining in the third quarter, the Bayhawks used three consecutive goals from Rubeor to take a 12-9 advantage with nine seconds left in the period.

The Bayhawks added four consecutive goals in the opening eight minutes of the fourth quarter, including a pair of markers from Rubeor, to increase the lead to 16-9.

With 23 seconds left, attackman Kevin Buchanan scored an unassisted goal to narrow the gap to 16-10, but the Cannons were unable to get any closer.

While Rubeor scored a game-high six goals to lead the Bayhawks en route to Bud Light MLL Player of the Game honors, Dixon added three goals, including a pair of two-point markers, with an assist.

Stone led Boston in a losing effort by scoring three goals with two assists.

The Bayhawks outshot Boston by a 54-44 margin and had a 30-29 advantage in ground balls.

Comeback Effort Leads Denver Into Title Game

BOSTON, Mass. - Attackman Chris Bocklet scored five of his game-high six goals in the second half as the top-seeded Denver Outlaws overcame a nine-point deficit in the second half to advance to the 2012 Major League Lacrosse Championship Game with a 13-12 victory over the Long Island Lizards at Harvard Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Outlaws, who have now won seven straight games dating back to the regular season, will advance to face either second-seeded Chesapeake or third-seeded and defending MLL champion Boston in Sunday's MLL Championship Game at 3 p.m.

After the Lizards took a 2-0 lead in the opening seven minutes of the first quarter on goals from midfielders Ryan Young and Stephen Peyser, the Outlaws trimmed the deficit to 2-1 on a power-play goal from Bocklet.

But, the Lizards answered by scoring four unanswered goals, including a two-point marker from Peyser, to extend their advantage to 7-1 with 7:16 left in the first half.

The teams traded goals to end the first half, giving Long Island a commanding 8-2 lead at the intermission.

In the opening two minutes of the second half, the Lizards upped their cushion to 10-2 on back-to-back goals from midfielder Kevin Unterstein and attackman Max Seibald. Bocklet answered with his second goal of the game for the Outlaws before Long Island added a pair of goals from rookie attackman Tommy Palasek and midfielder Mike Unterstein, expanding the margin to 12-3 with 11:32 left in the third quarter.

However, the Outlaws answered less than a minute later when midfielder Peet Poillon scored on an unassisted goal, narrowing the margin to 12-4 and igniting a six-goal run to end the third quarter. Bocklet scored twice during the six-goal spurt, which cut the deficit to 12-9.

A pair of Bocklet goals in the first three minutes of the fourth quarter trimmed the margin to 12-11 before Poillon tied the game at 12-12 with an unassisted tally with 11:29 remaining in regulation.

Attackman Jeremy Sieverts, who was named as the 2012 Warrior MLL Most Improved Player of the Year, gave Denver a 13-12 edge when he scored with 6:19 left on an unassisted marker past goalkeeper Drew Adams.

From there, the Denver defense held Long Island without a goal and held on to earn the victory.

Bocklet earned Bud Light MLL Player of the Game honors with his six-goal effort while Poillon added three goals. Rookie attackman Mark Matthews contributed a goal with four assists for the Outlaws, who were without attackman Brendan Mundorf. Honored as the 2012 Bud Light MLL Most Valuable Player, Mundorf suffered an ankle injury during practice on Friday and was not available for the game.

Peyser led the Lizards with two goals, including a two-point marker, with an assist while Seibald added two goals with an assist.
