BOWL
ATLANTA, Ga.- The official rosters for the 3rd annual HBCU
All-Star Bowlfootball game were released today and once again features
the best of the
best in HBCU football. For the second consecutive year, the game
will be
played at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta on December 18, 2011 beginning
at 3
p.m.
The nation's premier senior all-star game, the top 120
draft-eligible
seniors from the major HBCU Football Conferences (MEAC,
SWAC, SIAC, and
CIAA) are invited to compete in the contest which features an
East versus
West format. The East leads the series 2-0.
This year’s contest will feature several of the nation's top players such
as Jackson State quarterback Casey Therriault who is ranked
third in the
NCAA’s Football Championship Subdivision and and Winston-Salem
runningback
Nicholas Cooper who is currently ranked No. 10 in Division II
rushing
yards. Also highlighting this year's roster is the largest number
of
Division I transfers, 12 to compete in the game.
"Our goal was to establish this game so players would realize
they too
have an opportunity to still play at the next level; that is why
this game
was created," said HBCU All-Star Bowl CEO Derick Moore. "I am very
pleased
with this year's talent in the game especially with the great number
of
Division I players that transferred to HBCU programs."
Players for the HBCU All-Star Bowl are selected based on their
current
season's performance as well as statistics, pre-season recognition
and
conference accolades. Other intangibles are a player's height,
weight,
speed and NFL draft potential.
"On behalf of our CEO Derick Moore, myself and the HBCU
All-Star Bowl
selection committee we are pleased to announce the 2011 rosters
for this
year’s game," said HBCU All-Star Bowl Director of Player Personnel
Taber
Small. "As a committee we evaluate games, talk to professional
scouts,
review statistics and gather information from the universities.
The
decisions we make are very tough because of the great talent that
is
spread across the board in each conference. This year we have selected
who
we feel are the top players in HBCU Football to showcase
their talent
in front of professional organizations.”
In only it's third year, the first two games produced five NFL
Draft
picks: OL Ramon Harewood (Morehouse) and CB Phillip Adams (South
Carolina
State) from the 2009 game, and OL J.C. Culbreath (South Carolina
State),
DL Frank Kearse (Alabama A&M) and Curtis Holcomb (Florida
A&M) from the
2010 contest. In addition to the draftees, the game has
also produced 51
free agents signings, including a record high 35 in
2011.
Bowl week kicks off with a one day official combine
administered by
National Football Scouting of Indianapolis, Ind. on December
13, 2011 and
continues throughout the week. In addition to the combine, the
bowl week
schedule includes practices and player interviews with NFL, CFL,
UFL and
Arena Football teams. The week also includes community visits by
the
players, a life skills session, financial adviser seminar
and
entertainment weekend events.
